Preparing the stone is a process that helps the stonemason’s job of fitting the stone. In most of our jobs in Sydney we are cladding structural concrete walls with 100mm to 200mm thick sandstone. The finished look is a dry stone appearance but is fixed to the wall using mortar and brick ties. The sandstone comes to us in the form of ‘ballast’ which is chunks of stone 200mm thick by various lengths and heights. We then have to shape the stone accordingly.
